Scientists measure this range of salinity in parts per thousand (ppt). Brackish water usually falls between 0.5 and 30 ppt. Seawater averages about 35 ppt.
Where do you find it? Mostly in estuaries and mangrove coastlines, where a river meets the sea and the two mix. These surface waters support unique ecosystems. Specialized brackish water fish, aquatic plants, and other species have adapted to live between freshwater habitats and fully marine ones. - Reverse Osmosis (RO) or Electrodialysis. These are the two most common methods. Reverse osmosis pushes pressurized water through semi-permeable membranes. The membranes let water molecules pass but block salt and impurities. Electrodialysis uses an electric current and ion-selective membranes to pull ions out of the water instead.
- Concentrate Disposal. Desalination leaves behind a concentrated brine. This brine must be managed responsibly, discharged to the ocean, injected into deep wells, or treated further for resource recovery.
- Post-Treatment. The fresh water is then balanced for pH, remineralized for taste and health, and disinfected to meet drinking water standards.
- Distribution and Storage. Finally, the treated water is stored or piped out for drinking, irrigation, or industrial use.
